John J. Mastalski
John J. Mastalski, 94, of Hobe Sound, died May 27, 2011, at his home. Born in Philadelphia, Penn., he had been a resident of Hobe Sound for 15 years coming from Newport, Rhode Island. He was a career officer in the US Navy, retiring after 30 years of military service. He served in World War II through the Vietnam War as a Naval Engineer and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal; Good Conduct Medal (3); American Defense Service Medal; American Campaign Medal; Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal; Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Stars; Korean Presidential Unit Citation; and United Nations Medal. He was a Lifetime Member of the VFW and was a member of the Retired Officers’ Association. He was a parishioner of St. Christopher Catholic Church, Hobe Sound. Survivors include three sons, Michael E. Mastalski of Sacramento, Calif., John H. Mastalski of Hobe Sound, and Anthony Mastalski of Fredericksburg, Va.; three daughters, Catherine E. Byron of Faribault, Minn., Elizabeth M. Walker of Anacortes, Wash., and Stephanie A. Medeiros of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Angela Maria Mastalski, in 2006.
