Coach Warner teaches more than sports

Physical Education teacher Dan Warner puts dedication, sweat and experience into his coaching at Hobe Sound Elementary, and he has been doing that for 24 years. Students say they love his kid-like and fun-loving spirit. They also enjoy the games he puts together for them to play.

Mr. Warner has not always been a coach at HSES. He was a tennis coach at different colleges in West Virginia, where he was born, and when he moved to Florida, he coached at Martin Downs Country Club.

He had always wanted to teach kids, so when Hobe Sound Elementary School needed a coach, he applied for the job. The principal at the old Hobe Sound Elementary School was the wife of Coach Warner’s boss at Martin Downs, who had recommended him for the job.

Coach Warner says that he always wanted to coach because he “loves sports and games.” He mostly plays tennis in his spare time, and he coaches youth programs at the Hobe Sound Boys & Girls Club, along with the tennis and basketball programs at the school.

He has gotten offers to go back to different colleges to coach, but he stayed at Hobe Sound Elementary to keep the programs going.

Coach Warner says his greatest accomplishment in life is helping kids feel important.
