William R. Smith

William R. Smith, 91, of Tequesta, died June 12, 2011, at his home. Mr. Smith was a retired Lt. Colonel in the United States Air Force serving during World War II. During his twenty-five year career he graduated flight school from West Point. His plane was shot down over Yugoslavia on July 4, 1943, and was presumed missing in action. He was a member of the American Legion Post 271, and Strategic Air Command. He was born in Newburg, New York on August 10, 1919, to the late George Smith and Mary O’Shaunessey Smith. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his wife Patricia Smith. Survivors include his sons, Kevin Smith, Tequesta; Bill Smith, Palm Beach Gardens; and grandson Michael Smith, Jupiter.
