Pick-up’ tennis offers sport year round
Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning, from 8am to approximately 10am, people of all ages gather to play tennis at the public courts on Hercules Street. There is no charge to play, other than a can of tennis balls occasionally, and it’s good exercise, though no one feels that’s the purpose of the game.
They’ve been gathering to exercise…er, play tennis…for the past 31 years, year-round, weather permitting.
“We are quite a Hobe Sound institution,” says Eric Buetens, one of the players who’s always recruiting new tennis players from throughout Martin County and the Treasure Coast.
“There are no age limitations, but there are ability limitations,” he adds. “This is not a group for beginners.”
The group, which started when the park was built in 1979, requires that players have some skill in order to participate.
“We’ve had players a young as 12 and probably as old as 88,” Buetens adds. “As long as players are solid, intermediate players or above, they are welcome.”
