Five hair stylists launch their independence

Sometimes, like baby birds perched on a nest’s edge, all that’s required to fly is a leap of faith—or a nudge. Leaping from a secure job as hair salon employees to become independent hair stylists, five friends and co-workers now can be found at The Hair Company on Bridge Road.

The most colorful building in Hobe Sound, a former Camp Murphy barracks owned by hair designer Greg Huber, The Hair Company is as happy a place inside as it is outside, especially now that its chairs are leased to Hobe Sound residents April Dunworth, Kendralyn Deem, Cathy Pires, Deanna Rothgeb, and Marcie Ryan of Palm City, whose business card promises a “Fun Atmosphere.”

“It was a little bit scary at first,” says Marcie about making the change, “but it’s so, so nice to work for yourself. It’s exciting.”

All of the women just returned last week from a hair convention in Orlando. “We saw a lot of new styles,” says Cathy. “Shaggier looks with lots of razor cutting.” All five of the women, master hair stylists and colorists, are anxious to share the new looks.

Deanna is a licensed cosmetologist who gives facials using Christin products. Her card reads, “Unbeatable Prices!”

“We made the decision kind of quickly,” Marcie adds, “so we really didn’t have time to contact all our former customers. We just want them to be able to find us if they want to.”

To make an appointment, clients should call the hair stylists directly. Marcie works every day except Sundays and Mondays. She can be reached at 682.551.4149.

April works from 9am to 5pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and can be reached at 772.485.0852.

Cathy has varying hours on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, so be sure to call first for an appointment: 561.222.3560.

Deanna’s schedule includes Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Call 772.634.2571.

Kendralyn’s schedule is determined by her appointments, so call 772.209.9032.

No one should have trouble finding any of them now.
